Chiropractic, A Brief Introduction
Chiropractic is a healing art concerned with the restoration of the spinal column and its other related skeletal structures. Because of the vast distribution of the nervous system, the Doctor of Chiropractic, via manipulation (the chiropractic adjustment), treats disturbances of the spine and frame in order to facilitate the body's basic healing ability.
The Chiropractic Examination And Treatment
On your first visit to the chiropractor, after informed consent is gained, your full health history will be taken and you will be given a physical examination, to include a spinal examination, which studies spinal motion and integrity, orthopaedic testing and a complete neurological exam, when warranted, and possibly x-rays only if needed. You will then be given the opportunity to retain what you have learnt at your consultation exam before treatment begins.
The chiropractor's main treatment method is the adjustment (spinal manipulation). Using the hands, the chiropractor will adjust specific segments of the spinal column and/or extremities with a quick and usually painless thrust that mobilises the vertebrae and can be accompanied by an audible release (sound). Ancillary treatment modes are used only if to enhance the restorative benefits of the adjustment.
Such adjustments may have to be repeated regularly over a period of time to achieve the desired correction, much like orthodontic braces on teeth. The relief of these spinal misalignments and nerve irritations will help facilitate the body in its natural effort to return to normal health.
Along with the adjustment, nutrition, exercise, general health and well being, work and recreational habits are all considered.
Chiropractic has long and short term goals. The short-term goal is to get the presenting complaint under control and the patient in a pain free state. Long term goals are to correct overall imbalances in the spine that led to the problem originally and to prevent recurrence, optimising health and wellness. Again, the concept of prevention through enhanced well being must be stressed.
Through chiropractic care the body will be better able to deal with the many difficulties that it confronts daily. One does not have to be ill to benefit from chiropractic care. Many athletes utilise chiropractic to help improve performance. Chiropractic has helped so many people of all ages.
Chiropractic has also been reported to give ancillary benefit with a wide range of ailments - by facilitating the body's basic healing ability and by removing interference in the nervous system (which is mechanical-electrical and biochemical). More research is being done, just as in all medical displines.
More technical reading into the primary and ancillary benefits of chiropractic care is available for those interested. We suggest the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) and The Chiropractic Journal for a start. Or ask your Doctor of Chiropractic who is fully registered and/or licensed with their overseeing body, which regulates and supports the profession.
